The cluster of lanes that form The Lanes are the heart of Brighton. Several of the lanes were formed by wealthy seafaring merchants who wanted a little privacy from their neighbours. Today, these lanes are home to a varied and eclectic mix of independent shops, cafes and pubs, with a wide range of wares on offer for shoppers. There are several specialist shops selling everything from vintage clothing to handmade gifts, jewellery and homeware products.
The Lanes area is a pedestrianised shopping area in the heart of Brighton, stretching from North Street down to Gardner Street, more about plumbing with Brighton and Hove Life (brightonandhovelife.co.uk). The Lanes is a maze of alleyways lined with shops, cafes and pubs. With so many hidden gems - including some independent fashion boutiques and quirky homeware stores - it's a shoppers'dream come true. If you fancy browsing Brighton's trendy independent retailers, The Lanes is the place to head for style inspiration. In The Lanes, there are two streets known as The Close and The Parlour, which allude to how the old town evolved.
Once the port of Old Sarum - and historically positioned in the centre of a circle of villages - Salisbury was surrounded by a walled enclosure and its narrow streets branched out like spokes from the hub of the marketplace. These days, the area is better known for buzzy shops and restaurants. In the winding alleyways and little squares of The Lanes area, there are more than 200 independent shops, and windows laden with antique and classic jewellery sit alongside high-fashion clothing and modern interior design shops.
The Lanes are particularly good for gift shopping, and have some lovely little cafs stacked with indulgent treats to perk up the weariest of shoppers. The new landlord and brewery have taken on this challenge to save one of Britains most historical pubs. If you’re looking for a decent pint of beer then this should be your first port of call, although if you want your food as well then I would advise starting at the top and working down.
Shopping centres
As with most modern shopping centres, the various retail spaces and interior design blends are often distinctly marked out and available for rent. Businesses from a variety of industries, including arts, media and entertainment have historically leased Brighton’s Churchill Square shopping centre. With a Jamie’s Italian restaurant that seats 200 people, some 150 restaurants and cafes on the upper level, and hundreds of brand name shops on the ground floor, Churchill Square offers a vast choice of places to eat, drink and shop.

Hotel Pelirocco
The night before our visit to the Pelirocco we took in a gig at the Forum in Kentish Town. I’d booked us a room here, and foolishly told the kids that it was just like a hotel, only better, as it had all manner of rock memorabilia. In anticipation of our stay they had listened intently to Motown Junk (first time) and Slow Turismo (which they are now obsessed with) during the car journey – despite the fact there is no let’s-stop-the-car when this song comes on (it features heavily on the playlist for my new radio show).
As such, by the time we arrived at the hotel they were absolutely buzzing: eyes wide open,. Housed in a converted inn dating back to the 15th century, sleeping accommodations at the Hotel Pelirocco are as varied as its clientele. Catering to rockstars and celebrities, owner Sandra Hillier set out to create "the most rock n roll hotel in England" when she opened its doors in 2010. The edgy clothes and artwork of her fashionable guests adorn the walls.
So does the art of London's top tattoo artists in every space of this profanely beautiful boutique hotel. The Pelirocco prides itself on its open-minded ethos, which is reflected in its unique and eclectic mix of rooms. In fact, going to the hotel's website, you are asked how much trouble you want to get into at your holiday destination. As well as free wifi and other freebies, the hotel also offers tattoos from its resident in-house tattoo artist; Tony Hulme; for a fee.
Seadragon
Seadragon is a low-key, chilled out hostel in the Hove area and one of my personal favourites. The only negative aspect I'd say is that there is no lift (there are only four floors) but if you're travelling light then it's a perfect place to stay. There are also shared bathrooms on every floor, which occasionally can be a bit messy. Overall though, Seadragon is great for meeting fellow travellers and lovely staff and perfect for the budget conscious.
Seadragon Hostel is a two-minute walk from the seafront promenade of Hove, Sussex, in the English south coast. It has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with creative decor. The hostel is peaceful, tranquil and cozy, far away from the excitement of seaside life. Seadragon offers simple, clean dormitory accommodation at an affordable price. Rooms come with one, two or four beds with shared facilities on each floor. Seadragon Hostel's name comes from the dragon-like sea creature found in mythology.
The friendly staff will give you a warm welcome and help with any questions or queries, while the quieter upper-floor rooms are great for those who need to catch up on some sleep. This is a brilliant place to stay if you want to meet other travellers during your visit, or just intend to be out of the hostel most of the time. Just 6 minutes’ walk from Brighton’s vibrant seafront, train and bus stations, Seadragon is close to some of the UK’s best pubs and clubs. You’ll have a choice of three luxury ensuite rooms with television and tea and coffee making facilities. All our beds are extremely comfortable with faux-down pillows. Seadragon is a friendly and relaxed hostel, that is discreetly tucked away from the main high street in an old converted house. There are 6 rooms in total; 1 double bedroom, 2 twin share bedrooms (each with it's own wash-basin and toilet) and 3 dormitories (1 with four beds, 1 with 6 and 1 with 8).
Seadragon Hostel occupies a listed Queen Anne house in Hove’s historic seafront. Bright and clean, it provides bunks in clean modern rooms, comfortable lounge areas and free Wi-Fi. Portland Square Gardens is just a couple of minutes’ walk away. Brighton is just 20 minutes’ train ride away. So, you’ve got yourself a date. Now all you need is to find somewhere nice for a drink and a bite to eat. When it comes to Brighton bars, you’re spoilt for choice with local hot spots like the Prince Regent, Churchill’s and the Fuller’s Brewery.
Drakes Hotel
Drake’s is much more than a hotel to visit in London. On the one hand, it’s a beautiful building with history and character and quirky, delicious food - but on the other hand it’s an exterior-to-interior experience of London you wouldn’t otherwise have. North Laine
We’re kind of obsessed with the current North Laine look we’re seeing in the streets of Brighton. Bright colours, vintage, downright odd and different and a general disregard for convention. We made reference to this glorious Wellington St set during our recent TopShop campaign and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. Compassionate shoes and boots for men, women and children are on offer at Brighton’s largest independent shoe shop. As well as styles made with ethically sourced all-natural leather, the shop also stocks a wide range of footwear crafted with synthetic microfiber, which has no animal products or by-products.
Vegetarian Shoes
Although some of the shoes are handmade, most are made by production companies in Italy and India. Vegetarian Shoes avoids leather, but not style, offering a range of men's and women's chunky boots and wellington boots (complete with down-at-heel faux suede) as well as skirts, jackets and bags. The company has stores in Brighton and London, but also sells online (vegetarian-shoes. co. uk). It’s a £1,300 question. I need to know if you’re vegetarian because you love animals or because you don’t like the idea of animal products going into your body.
It doesn’t have to be a binary choice: there are all kinds of vegetarians and vegans out there eating meat, fish, dairy and eggs with a fair degree of regularity. Baroque Bespoke jewellery is elegant, masculine and stylish. The eight designs are the result of years of experimentation mixing unusual materials. Skulls made from skull-shaped moulds allow the goldsmiths to add pieces of coloured glass, rolled silver and gemstones to this dark design. But what if you want something a bit different?.
Infinity Foods
So there I stood, lost in the aisles of Infinity Foods on St Andrews Street, Brighton. The place looked great and all the staff I met were 100% helpful and knowledgeable but I just couldn’t see how this shop could offer so much more than every other health food shop in Brighton. Now I find the whole concept of healthy eating to be absolutely fascinating (mostly because you can eat as many french fries as you like without feeling guilty) which is something that might have played a part in my obsessive online browsing.
The White House
The White House is a historic building, built in the 1930s and has recently been refurbished. It's location next to the seaside makes it a unique place that doesn't look like any other hotel. In fact, most people are surprised by the inside of the hotel. If you want something active to do, I can recommend going for a run near the beach and just enjoying the view. I don't think there is any other location on earth where you could see a pope being driven past on his way to visit a peace park and walk over a beach covered with stars during sunset while listening to Sigur Ros in your headphones.
The whole of Kemp Town is right behind our hotel. ". Located a few doors down from Kemp Town’s most exclusive residents, The White House is a good value bed and breakfast. The rooms vary in size and style, but overall you’ll get some tasteful furnishings and speciousness. The restaurant within the hotel isn’t one for high cuisine, but you do get what you pay for. Located in the centre of this ever-evolving neighbourhood, past the town hall and opposite Farmer Browns, The White House will appeal to those looking for something more than just an overnight stay.
For visitors to the area, a few doors down are several restaurants, cafes bars, a cinema and even a pub!. If youre planning on spending your evenings amongst among the pomp and wonder of Kemp Town, but still want to escape once the lights come up, The White House is a sound option. Built in the 1930s, and with only 25 rooms, its recent refurbishment now has it on point with the rest of the competition.

Nestled in the middle of London, Hotel Una is refined, chic and elegant with the perfect balance of understated and glitzy.
With rocking interior design throughout, this hotel has interiors to die for. In fact, youll be falling head over heals for Hotel Una before you even get inside. The exterior architecture of this boutique hotel is decadent and has an urban feel. The rooms are unique and offer a variety of styles, most have a pretty cool design to them which I thought worked well. However, there aren’t many decently sized rooms to choose from, so you should probably only consider this hotel if you’re traveling solo or with one other person.
In fact for the two suites you have more space then in all the other rooms combined. If the thought of sourdough makes you cringe, take a breath of fresh-baked bread and relax. Infinity Foods is a serious departure from Brighton's earth mother vibe. Its robust shelves are stacked to the ceiling with enough meat substitutes to make even the most hardened carnivore hold off panicking. There's also arcane ingredients (organic goji berries? Liquid smoke?) and a generous display of cruelty-free cosmetics.
